Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion is regarded by many as the sixth first growth. However, La Mission Haut-Brion is not a first growth, and resides in the southern part of Bordeaux, in Graves.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion’s vineyard stretches across land in the municipalities of both Talence and Pessac and is located just a few miles southwest of Bordeaux’s city center. The property stands opposite Château Haut-Brion and shares the same vast terrace of superb gravelly soils, ideal for cultivating vines, already referred to as “Haut-Brion” on ancient maps and deeds.

One day, he (Marshal Louis Armand de Vignerot du Plessis) tasted a wine that he considered especially remarkable and asked his servant where it came from, who said: ‘La Mission Haut-Brion. ‘Using the words of his great-uncle Cardinal Richelieu, the marshal cried: ‘If God forbade drinking, would he have made wine so good?’. Thereafter this day, the new governor regularly served La Mission Haut-Brion at his table.
