Chateau Climens 2022
On the 30th May 2023, we now see the release of the first growth wine from Barsac in Sauternes named Climens. The ex negociant price is 106.25 Euro a bottle. The recommended price for retail £1,304.40 per case of 12 bottles at 75cl each according to Liv-ex.
The past few years have been tumultuous for Château Climens. The estate did not produce any wine in 2017 nor 2021 due to frosts and challenging weather conditions. In 2018, the harvest was severely affected by mildew. Nonetheless, that year, Château Climens launched a new dry white, Asphodèle. Last year, as reported by Decanter, the estate also announced a new majority owner.
As such, there is little to no secondary market activity for the past five vintages, which is why the chart above has a gap between the 2016 and the 2022 vintages. This absence of releases may also go some way in explaining the high release price of the 2022 vintage.
Château Climens trading opportunities
Due to this high release price, buyers looking for trading opportunities among Château Climens back-vintages have plenty of options.
Buyers looking for other options may want to consider the 2009 and 2007 vintages, which are available at discounts of 46.0% and 35.6% to this year’s release respectively.
The 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016 vintages also look attractive and all fall below the fair value line.
