Chateau Le Pin 2022
On the 14th July 2023, we now see the release of the non classified garage wine from Pomerol named Le Pin, and the price is up 17.7% on last years release. The ex negociant price is 2,000 Euro a bottle. The wine is being offered by the international trade for £28,400.00 per case of 12 bottles at 75cl each according to Liv-ex, and this will result in an increase of 14.5% on the opening price of the 2021's.
While 2013 was a bad year for most of Bordeaux, Le Pin was one of the worst affected. As a result, the Château did not release a wine that year, nor did it participate in the En Primeur campaign.
At about £28,400 per case, the new release is good value for those lucky enough to secure an allocation. However, buyers looking for other options may want to consider the 2016, 2018 and 2021 vintages. See more pricing analysis below.
Fair Value analysis
There is no significant correlation between Le Pin Market Prices and Neal Martin scores, the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology. That said, Le Pin prices are 93% correlated to Antonio Galloni scores.
Today’s release is one of the best value wines on the market for anyone lucky enough to secure an allocation. That said, buyers looking for opportunities in back vintages might want to consider the 2016 vintage. The wine received 98 points from Neal Martin (Vinous) and is available at a discount of 14.0% to today’s release.
The 2018 vintage also looks attractive; it has 97 points from Neal Martin and is also available at a 14.0% discount to today’s release.
The lower-scoring 2012 and 2021 might also be of interest.
Critics’ scores
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 96-98 points, highlighting the ‘quasi-Burgundian bouquet’ and ‘wonderful balance’. He deems the 2022 Le Pin ‘seriously fine’, but adds the caveat that he is taking comparisons to the 1945 or 1947 Le Pin with ‘a big pinch of salt’.
‘This is so seductive’, said Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Independent), who gave the wine a range of 97-99+ points. She highlights the nose which ‘gallops out with bold, expressive’ aromas, praising the ‘long and spicy’ finish.
Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) scored the wine at 97 points, lauding the ‘expertly structured and intense wine,’ with the caveat that drinkers should ‘give it time’ to build through the palate.
