On the 13th of June 2023, we have seen the release of Chateau Leoville Poyferre.

On the 13th June 2023, we now see the release of the second growth wine from Saint-Julien named Leoville Poyferre, and the price is up 16.7% on last years release. The ex negociant price is 84 Euro a bottle. The wine is being offered by the international trade for £1,014.00 per case of 12 bottles at 75cl each according to Liv-ex, and this will result in an increase of 17.9% on the opening price of the 2021's.


The 2014, 2016 and 2019 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release.


Fair Value analysis

There is no significant correlation between Château Léoville Poyferré and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.


Buyers looking for value might want to consider options among back vintages.


The 2019 and 2016 vintages both scored 96 points from Neal Martin and are available at a discount of 23.5% and 18.6% respectively to today’s release.


The 2014 vintage also looks attractive, with 95 points from Neal Martin and a Market Price of £690 per 12×75.


Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a score of 95-97 points. He mentions in his tasting note that this wine ‘may well rest at the top of my banded score once in bottle’.


William Kelley (Wine Advocate) scored the wine 94-96 points, commenting that it ‘turned out very nicely’. He added that ‘it remains the most flamboyant and demonstrative of the three Léoville estates’.


James Suckling gave it a barrel range of 96-97 points. In his tasting note, he commented that it was ‘a very solid LP’ that was ‘polished’ and ‘thoughtful’.


Jean-Marc Quarin awarded it 99 points. He noted that ‘the wine evolves on a well-controlled power, on a great finish with noble tannicity’ and added that ‘it’s so disturbing’.
