Bordeaux, Wine Investment, News, En Primeur, Critic Scores, Chateau Pavie

On the 19th of June 2023, we have seen the release of Chateau Pavie

Chateau Pavie 2022

On the 19th June 2023, we now see the release of the Premier Grand Cru Classe A wine from Saint-Emilion named Pavie, and the price is up 28.2% on last years release. The ex negociant price is 300 Euro a bottle. The wine is being offered by the international trade for £3,576.00 per case of 12 bottles at 75cl each according to Liv-ex, and this will result in an increase of 28.5% on the opening price of the 2021's.

The 2022 vintage is being released with a special engraved bottle to celebrate 25 years of the Perse family at Château Pavie. The volume released is also 70% down year-on-year, which may go some way to explaining the price increase.

At this price, the 2016, 2018 and 2020 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Fair Value analysis

There is no significant correlation between Pavie Market Prices and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.

Buyers looking for value in back vintages might want to consider the 2016 and 2018 vintages which each received a score of 96 points from Neal Martin. They are available at a discount of 16.7% and 21.7% respectively to today’s release.

The 2020, which was scored a barrel range of 95-97 points from the critic, is also available at a discount of 28.3% to today’s release.

The lower-scoring 2017 and 2015 also look attractive.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 93-95 points, describing the ‘undoubtedly decadent and rich’ profile that is balanced against texture and tannins. He mentions that he is ‘intrigued to revisit this after bottling’.

‘Like an unpolished diamond’, noted James Suckling who scored the wine at 95-96 points. He highlights the wine’s profile, calling it ‘full and layered without being heavy’, and full of ‘velvety, edgy tannins.

Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) gave it a score of 95 points, calling it an ‘impressive Pavie’ that is ‘wonderfully intense and concentrated’. In her words: ‘Powerful, will take the full ten years to come around’.
