Chateau Ausone 2022
On the 5th June 2023, we now see the release of the fifth growth wine from Saint-Emilion named Ausone, and the price is up 13.0% on last years release. The ex negociant price is 565.00 Euro a bottle. The wine is offered by the international trade for £6,800.00 per case of 12 bottles at 75cl each according to Liv-ex, and this will result in an increase of 13.3% on the opening price of the 2021's.
The 2018 and 2019 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.
Fair Value analysis
There is no significant correlation between Ausone Market Prices and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.
That said, Château Ausone prices are 75% correlated to Jane Anson scores.
The 2019 scored an impressive 98 points from Neal Martin (Vinous), who commended it on its ‘wonderful delineation’. It is available at a discount of 14.4% to today’s release.
The 2018 is also an attractive option, scoring 97 points and available at a discount of 10.3% to the 2022.
The 2012 and 2017 are quite interesting, both having received 96 points like the 2022 but available at discounts of 33.8% and 35.9% to today’s release. Buyers looking to break into a high-demand label might consider these as an entry point.
Critics’ scores
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 95-97.5 points, calling it ‘intellectual and persistent in the mouth.’ He expresses some hesitation, though, wondering if he ‘had witnessed this Saint-Émilion demonstrate its full potential’ – hence the atypical barrel range score.
James Suckling gave it a barrel range of 97-98 points, describing this ‘young Ausone’ unlike any other he remembers and calling it ‘full-bodied with flamboyant fruit and energy’.
Jean-Marc Quarin scored the wine 99 points, calling it ‘ultra meticulous on the palate’.
Meanwhile, William Kelley (Wine Advocate) scored it at a slightly lower range of 94-96+ points. He said that ‘given its imposing levels of structuring extract, it will require patience’.
